Thomas Howard Kean (b.1935) is an American politician, educator, and author, best known as Governor of New Jersey (1982–90) and Chairman of the 9/11 Commission (2002–04.) His leadership emphasized education reform, environmental policy, and bipartisan cooperation.
Born in New York City, Kean studied at Princeton University (B.A., 1957) and Columbia University (M.A., 1958.) He entered politics in 1967, serving in the New Jersey General Assembly (1968–77) before being elected governor in 1981. His tenure saw tax cuts, job creation, and landmark environmental protections, earning recognition as one of America’s most effective state leaders.
After leaving office, Kean became President of Drew University (1990–2005,) strengthening academics and public engagement. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, which produced the 9/11 Commission Report (2004,) analyzing the attacks and national security.
Kean’s notable publications include The Politics of Inclusion (1988,) exploring governance and bipartisanship, and Without Precedent: The Inside Story of the 9/11 Commission (2006,) co-authored with Lee H. Hamilton, detailing the commission’s findings.
