Inspirational Quotes by Thomas Edward Brown (Manx Poet)

Thomas Edward Brown (1830–97,) commonly T. E. Brown, was a Manx poet, scholar, and theologian known for his narrative poetry in Anglo-Manx dialect and contributions to Victorian literature. His works capture rural life, folklore, and the Isle of Man’s cultural identity.

Born in Douglas, Isle of Man, he studied at King William’s College and Christ Church, Oxford, earning a double first in classics. He later became a fellow of Oriel College (1854) and pursued a career in education, serving as headmaster of The Crypt School, Gloucester, and later teaching at Clifton College.

Brown’s Anglo-Manx poetry reflects Manx traditions, humor, and everyday life. Notable works include Fo’c’s’le Yarns (1881,) a collection of narrative poems; The Doctor (1887,) exploring Manx folklore; The Manx Witch (1889;) and Old John and Other Poems (1893,) depicting rural characters and storytelling traditions.
