Inspirational Quotes by Thomas Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar (Scottish Businessman)

Thomas Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar (1864–1930,) was a Scottish whisky distiller, businessman, and politician who expanded Dewar’s Scotch whisky globally. His marketing innovations and international travels established the brand as an industry leader.

Born in Perth, Scotland, he was the son of John Dewar, founder of John Dewar & Sons. After his father’s death, he and his brother John took over the business, with Thomas spearheading marketing and international expansion. Between 1892 and 1894, he traveled to 26 countries, securing distribution deals and promoting Dewar’s whisky worldwide. His promotional strategies, including hiring individuals to request Dewar’s whisky in pubs before securing sales, were groundbreaking.

Dewar documented his travels in Ramble Round the Globe (1894,) detailing his experiences and observations. Beyond business, he was active in politics, serving as a Conservative Member of Parliament for St George, Tower Hamlets (1900–06.) Known for his stance on immigration policies, he was knighted in 1902, made a baronet in 1917, and elevated to the peerage as Baron Dewar in 1919.
