Terry Tempest Williams (b.1955) is an American writer, educator, conservationist, and activist known for her lyrical essays and environmental advocacy. Her work explores wilderness preservation, women’s health, and the intersection of nature and culture.
Born in Corona, California, she grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the arid landscape deeply influenced her writing. She studied English and biology at the University of Utah, earning a B.A. and M.Sc. in environmental education. Early in her career, she taught science in the Navajo Nation and worked at the Utah Museum of Natural History.
Williams’ notable works include Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place (1991,) examining environmental destruction and personal loss; An Unspoken Hunger: Stories from the Field (1994,) essays on nature and activism; and Red: Passion and Patience in the Desert (2001,) exploring the beauty and fragility of desert landscapes. Other books include Finding Beauty in a Broken World (2008,) When Women Were Birds: Fifty-four Variations on Voice (2012,) and The Hour of Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks (2016.)
