Terry Teachout (1956–2022,) fully Terrance Alan Teachout, was an American writer, biographer, critic, and musician. In addition to his writing, Teachout was a jazz musician and has performed with several notable musicians.

Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Teachout received his undergraduate degree from William Jewell College (1979) and earned a Master’s in English from the University of Missouri. Teachout was the drama critic for The Wall Street Journal, and his reviews appeared in publications such as The New York Times, National Review, and Commentary.

Teachout authored several books, including biographies of Louis Armstrong, H. L. Mencken, and Duke Ellington.
