Tama Janowitz (b.1956) is an American novelist and short story writer known for her satirical depictions of urban life and social dynamics. She is often linked to the “Brat Pack” authors, including Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney, who captured 1980s New York City.

Born in San Francisco, California, she studied at Barnard College (B.A., 1977) and Hollins College (M.A., 1979) before earning an M.F.A. from Columbia University (1985.) She gained recognition with Slaves of New York (1986,) a bestselling short story collection later adapted into a film (1989.)
