Inspirational Quotes by Susannah Centlivre (English Playwright)

Susanna Centlivre (c.1669–1723,) also Susanna Carroll, born Susanna Freeman, was an English playwright, poet, and actress, among the most successful female dramatists of the 18th century. Her witty, socially insightful works remained popular for nearly two centuries.

Born in Whaplode, Lincolnshire, she likely grew up in the region. Her early life is unclear, but she is believed to have run away and joined a traveling theater troupe, leading to a career in acting and playwriting. She later married Joseph Centlivre, a chef for Queen Anne, adopting his surname.

Centlivre wrote 19 plays, many becoming London stage staples. Her most famous work, The Busie Body (1709,) is a comedic masterpiece featuring strong-willed heroines and clever intrigue. Other notable plays include The Wonder: A Woman Keeps a Secret (1714,) exploring female agency; A Bold Stroke for a Wife (1718,) critiquing marriage laws; and The Platonic Lady (1707,) satirizing romantic ideals.

Her plays were performed at Drury Lane Theatre, and she was considered second only to Aphra Behn among female playwrights of her era.
