Inspirational Quotes by Susan Howatch (British Historical Novelist)

Susan Howatch (b.1940,) née Strut, is a British author of novels that explore themes of faith, power, and human relationships.

Born in Leatherhead, Surrey, England, Howatch obtained a law degree from King’s College and worked as a secretary before emigrating to the United States in 1964. She began her writing career in the 1970s and is best known for her Starbridge Series, which includes the critically acclaimed Glittering Images (1987,) a profound exploration of the Church of England through the lives of its clergy and their struggles with faith and ambition. This novel was followed by The Heartbreaker (1989,) which further delves into the complexities of love and moral dilemmas.

Another notable work, The High Price of Heaven (1990,) examines the intersection of spirituality and personal sacrifice. Howatch’s Church of England Series continues this exploration with titles such as Cassandra (1991) and Ultimate Prizes (1994.)

Howatch has used some of the profits from her novels to found an academic post in natural science and theology at the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University, devoted to linking the fields of science and religion. Her later books have also become known for their religious and philosophical themes. Making of a Christian (1999) reflects her deep interest in spiritual growth.

Scientists are treated like gods handing down new commandments. People tend to assume that religion has been disproved by science. But the scientist may tell us how the world works, not why it works, not how we should live our lives, not how we face death or make moral decisions.
