Inspirational Quotes by Stephen L. Carter (American Law Professor)

Stephen Lisle Carter (b.1954) is an American legal scholar, novelist, and public intellectual known for his writings on law, politics, religion, and race. He is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale Law School, where he has taught since 1982.

Born in Washington, D.C., Carter earned a B.A. in History from Stanford University (1976) and a J.D. from Yale Law School (1979.) He clerked for Judge Spottswood W. Robinson III and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, shaping his views on constitutional law and civil rights.

Carter has authored numerous nonfiction books, including The Culture of Disbelief: How American Law and Politics Trivialize Religious Devotion (1993,) Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy (1998,) The Dissent of the Governed (1998,) God’s Name in Vain (2000,) and Invisible: The Forgotten Story of the Black Woman Lawyer Who Took Down America’s Biggest Mobster (2018.)

He is also a novelist, with works such as The Emperor of Ocean Park (2002,) New England White (2007,) Palace Council (2008,) and The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln (2012,) blending legal intrigue with historical fiction.
