Shalom Cohen (1930–2022) was an Israeli Haredi Sephardic rabbi and scholar. He was the rosh yeshiva of the Old City branch of Porat Yosef Yeshiva and the head of the Council of Torah Sages for Shas. This ultra-Orthodox party represents Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews.
Born in Jerusalem, Cohen studied at the prestigious Porat Yosef Yeshiva and became a disciple of the renowned Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Cohen later became the head of the Porat Yosef Yeshiva and was a member of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate Council.
Cohen was known for his expertise in Jewish law and authored several books on the subject. He was considered a leading authority in the Sephardic Jewish community and was highly respected for his scholarship and leadership. He was vocal about politics, often criticizing political leaders opposed to his party’s agenda, and was a staunch opponent of military conscription for ultra-Orthodox men.
