Seve Ballesteros (1957–2011,) born Severiano Ballesteros Sota, was a Spanish professional golfer, celebrated as one of the sport’s most charismatic and influential figures. His imaginative shot-making and aggressive style redefined European golf, making him a global icon.
Born in Pedreña, Spain, he learned golf using a 3-iron on local beaches. Turning professional in 1974 at just 16, he gained international attention by finishing second at The Open Championship (1976.)
Ballesteros won five majors: The Open Championship (1979, 1984, 1988) and The Masters Tournament (1980, 1983,) becoming the first European to win at Augusta National. He dominated the European Tour, securing a record 50 titles, and played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Ryder Cup, leading Europe to multiple victories as both player and captain.
Beyond his playing career, Ballesteros contributed to golf course design and founded the Seve Trophy, a biennial team competition between Great Britain & Ireland and Continental Europe. His autobiography, Seve: The Official Autobiography (2007,) offers insights into his life and career.
