Inspirational Quotes by Sarah Doherty (American Mountaineer, Skier)

Sarah Doherty (1959–2023) was an American-Canadian amputee mountaineer and ski racer. She left an enduring legacy through her exceptional achievements and contributions.

Born in Taunton, Massachusetts, Doherty faced adversity at the age of 13 when a drunk driver took her right leg while she was riding her bicycle. Undeterred, just six months after this tragic incident, she embarked on the challenging journey of skiing on one leg, utilizing outrigger ski poles. Her determination propelled her into regional ski races, and by 1985, she committed to a full-time career in ski racing.

While pursuing a degree in Occupational Therapy at Boston University, Doherty became an influential pediatric occupational therapist in Seattle. Her passion for alpine pursuits expanded into mountaineering, marking her as the first one-legged woman to summit Mount Rainier in 1984. The following year, she achieved another historic feat by becoming the first amputee to summit Mount McKinley without a prosthetic limb.

In 1986, Doherty relocated to Canada, settling in British Columbia while maintaining dual citizenship. Her pivotal role in the inaugural U.S. National Disabled Ski Team in 1988 led her to participate in the Olympics in Calgary, showcasing adaptive ski racing on a global stage.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Doherty demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit. She developed innovative adaptive crutch designs and forearm crutches, ultimately founding SideStix Ventures in Roberts Creek, British Columbia.
