Sara Paretsky (b.1947) is an American crime fiction writer, best known for her V.I. Warshawski series, which transformed the portrayal of female private investigators in mystery novels, breaking gender barriers in detective fiction.
Born in Ames, Iowa, Paretsky earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Kansas (1967) and later completed a PhD in history and an MBA from the University of Chicago (1977.) She worked in insurance before becoming a full-time writer in 1985.
Her début novel, Indemnity Only (1982,) introduced V.I. Warshawski, a tough, independent female detective. The series includes Deadlock (1984,) Killing Orders (1985,) Bitter Medicine (1987,) Blood Shot (1988,) Burn Marks (1990,) Blacklist (2003,) Critical Mass (2013,) Shell Game (2018,) and Overboard (2022.)
Paretsky also wrote Ghost Country (1998) and Bleeding Kansas (2008,) along with her memoir Writing in an Age of Silence (2007.) She founded Sisters in Crime (1986,) advocating for women crime writers.
