Inspirational Quotes by Samuel Osgood (American Statesman)

Samuel Osgood (1747–1813) was an American merchant, statesman, and military officer known for his role in early U.S. government and finance. He was the first Postmaster General of the United States under the Constitution, serving during George Washington’s presidency.

Born in Andover, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard College, graduating in 1770. Initially pursuing theology, he later shifted to mercantile and political affairs. During the American Revolution, he led a company of minutemen at the Battle of Lexington and Concord (1775) and later served as Colonel and aide to General Artemas Ward.

Osgood was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate (1780) and served in the Continental Congress (1782–84.) He later became a U.S. Treasury commissioner (1785–89) before his appointment as Postmaster General (1789–91.) His New York City home, the Samuel Osgood House, served as George Washington’s first presidential mansion.

Beyond politics, Osgood was the founding president of the City Bank of New York (1812,) later Citibank. He authored several theological works, including Three Letters on Different Subjects (1811,) preserved at Columbia University.
