Inspirational Quotes by Rutherford B. Hayes (American President)

Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–93) was the 19th president of the United States, serving 1877–81. His presidency is best known for ending Reconstruction and withdrawing federal troops from the South, marking a turning point in American history.

Born in Delaware, Ohio, Hayes graduated from Kenyon College in 1842 and later attended Harvard Law School. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Ohio. His military service during the Civil War, where he rose from major to brevet brigadier general, earned him a reputation for leadership and bravery.

Hayes became president after the highly disputed election of 1876, resolved in his favor by a special commission. His presidency is most famous for the Compromise of 1877, which allowed Southern Democrats to regain local control. He also championed civil service reform and sought to reduce government corruption.

Hayes promoted free public schools and supported African American civil rights. His memoirs, The Diary of Rutherford B. Hayes (1922,) published posthumously, provide insight into his political philosophy and the challenges of his presidency. Historian Ari Hoogenboom’s Rutherford B. Hayes: Warrior and President (1995) provides an in-depth look at his life, military service, and presidency.
