Rod McKuen (1933–2015,) fully Rodney Marvin McKuen, was an American poet, singer, songwriter, and actor known for his evocative and lyrical poetry. Renowned for his accessible, romantic verse and unique voice, he became one of the best-selling poets of the 20th century.

Born in Oakland, California, McKuen dropped out of high school and held various jobs while nurturing his passion for writing and performing. His first taste of fame came in the 1950s as a songwriter and singer, but it was his poetry that earned him widespread recognition.

McKuen’s poetry collections, such as Listen to the Warm (1967) and Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows (1960,) are marked by themes of love, loss, and introspection. His straightforward, often romantic style resonated with readers and became particularly popular during the 1960s and 1970s. He also released albums of his poetry set to music, including The Sea (1964) and The World of Rod McKuen (1968.)

He also wrote for film and television, composing scores for movies such as The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969,) which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Jean.” His collaborations with artists such as Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand brought further acclaim.
