Robert Jeffrey Sternberg (b.1949) is an American psychologist and psychometrician known for his influential theories on intelligence, creativity, wisdom, and love. His research has shaped modern psychology, earning him numerous awards.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, he struggled with test anxiety, which later inspired his work on intelligence. He earned a B.A. from Yale University and a PhD from Stanford University, studying under Gordon Bower. He has held academic positions at Yale, Tufts, Oklahoma State University, and Cornell University, where he is currently a Professor of Human Development.

Sternberg’s key contributions include the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence, which broadens intelligence beyond IQ to include analytical, creative, and practical abilities, and the Triangular Theory of Love, defining love through intimacy, passion, and commitment. His investment theory of creativity and balance theory of wisdom are also widely studied.

His major works include Beyond IQ: A Triarchic Theory of Human Intelligence (1985,) Thinking Styles (1997,) Successful Intelligence (1996,) Wisdom, Intelligence, and Creativity Synthesized (2003,) and The Nature of Leadership (2017.) He has authored and edited over 1,500 publications, ranking among the most cited psychologists.
