Robert Bernard Reich (b.1946) is an American economist, professor, author, and political commentator known for his work on economic policy, income inequality, and labor rights. He has served in various government roles and is regarded as a leading progressive voice in economics and public policy.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Reich grew up in a middle-class family and developed an early interest in social and economic issues. He attended Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude in 1968, and later earned a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1973. His academic career began as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and he later joined the faculty at Harvard University, where he served as a professor of social and economic policy.
His political career includes serving as Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton 1993–97. During his tenure, he championed policies that supported workers’ rights, fair wages, and job training programs. He has also been a prominent advocate for raising the minimum wage and addressing wage disparity.
Reich is the author of several influential books, including The Work of Nations: Preparing for Capitalism (1991,) which explores the changing nature of the global economy and the need for policies that prioritize human well-being. His Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few (2015) highlights economic inequality and suggests reforms to create a more equitable system. In The Common Good (2018,) he argues that prioritizing the common good is essential for a thriving democracy and economy.
