Inspirational Quotes by Robert Cortes Holliday (American Editor)

Robert Cortes Holliday (1880–1947) was an American writer, literary editor, and critic known for his essays and contributions to literary culture. His works ranged from reflections on literature and city life to biographical studies of notable figures. He played a key role in shaping literary discussions of his time.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he studied at the Art Students’ League in New York, initially training as an illustrator. His career evolved into bookselling, librarianship, and editorial work. He contributed to New York Tribune, Doubleday, Page & Co., and George H. Doran & Co.. As chief editor of The Bookman (1919–20,) he influenced contemporary literary discourse.

His published works include The Walking-Stick Papers (1918,) a collection of humorous essays; Men and Books and Cities (1920) on literary culture and travel; and Literary Lanes and Other Byways (1925,) continuing his reflections on literature and life. He also wrote Booth Tarkington (1918,) a biography of the Pulitzer-winning author.

Holliday was the literary executor for poet Joyce Kilmer, compiling writings and reflections on him. His signature appears on The Greenwich Village Bookshop Door, housed at the Harry Ransom Center.
