Inspirational Quotes by Robert Anderson (American Playwright)

Robert Woodruff Anderson (1917–2009) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and theatrical producer known for his introspective dramas on human relationships and emotional struggles.

Born in New York City, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University (1939.) His early career in radio playwriting and teaching refined his storytelling.

His most famous play, Tea and Sympathy (1953,) ran for 712 Broadway performances before its film adaptation (1956) starring Deborah Kerr and John Kerr. Other notable works include Silent Night, Lonely Night (1959,) I Never Sang for My Father (1968,) and You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running (1967,) a collection of four one-act comedies.

Anderson also wrote screenplays, including The Nun’s Story (1959) and The Sand Pebbles (1966.) His novels After (1973) and Getting Up and Going Home (1978) explore identity and personal transformation.

Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame (1981,) he served as president of the Dramatists Guild of America (1971–73,) advocating for writers’ rights.
