Inspirational Quotes by Richard Taverner (English Bible Translator)

Richard Taverner (1505–75) was an influential English scholar and translator known for his contributions to the Protestant Reformation. He was patronized by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and the statesman Thomas Cromwell, for whom he compiled Taverner’s Bible in 1539. This work was a revision of Matthew’s Bible by John Rogers, originally published in 1537.

Born in Brisley, Norfolk, Taverner was educated at Corpus Christi College-Oxford, and later at the Inner Temple in London. He is best known for his translation work, particularly Taverner’s Bible, published in 1539. This work was a revision of the Matthew Bible and included significant improvements in language and readability, making the scriptures more accessible to the English-speaking public.

Apart from his Bible translation, Taverner published several other notable works. Proverbs or Adages (1539) is a collection of sayings and proverbs intended to impart wisdom and moral lessons to readers. His The Garden of Wisdom (1539) is a compilation of wise sayings from various sources, demonstrating his deep engagement with moral and philosophical thought.
