Richard John Neuhaus (1936–2009) was a Canadian-American Christian cleric, writer, and public intellectual who shaped religious and political discourse in the U.S. Originally a Lutheran pastor, he later converted to Catholicism, influencing conservative thought through theology and philosophy.

Born in Pembroke, Ontario, he moved to the U.S. and became a naturalized citizen. He studied at Concordia Seminary and was ordained a Lutheran minister in 1960. Engaged in civil rights and social justice, he converted to Catholicism and became a priest in 1991.

A prolific writer, Neuhaus founded the influential journal First Things and authored several books, including The Naked Public Square (1984) on religion in American politics, Doing Well and Doing Good (1992) on faith and economics, Death on a Friday Afternoon (2000) on the crucifixion, and American Babylon (2009) on faith and democracy. His work continues to shape contemporary religious thought.
