Richard Bernard “Red” Skelton (1913–97) was an American entertainer, comedian, and television personality best known for The Red Skelton Show (1951–71.) His career spanned vaudeville, radio, film, and television, making him one of the 20th century’s most beloved comedic figures. His humor blended slapstick, pantomime, and heartfelt storytelling, earning him a devoted audience.

Born in Vincennes, Indiana, he began performing young, working in medicine shows, vaudeville, and burlesque. Beyond television, Skelton was a successful writer and artist. He published Red Skelton’s Scrapbook of Smiles (1974) and The Great Lazarus (1986,) showcasing his storytelling and comedic insights. Later in life, he gained recognition as a painter, particularly for his clown portraits.
