Philip Nicholas Shuttleworth (1782–1842) was an English clergyman, theologian, and writer known for his contributions to religious scholarship.
Born in Kirkham, Lancashire, he studied at Winchester College before attending New College-Oxford, later becoming a fellow. He built a distinguished career in the Church of England, serving as Bishop of Chichester (1840–42.)
A prolific theological writer, his works reflected deep engagement with Christian doctrine and moral philosophy. His notable books include Sermons on Some of the Leading Principles of Christianity (1829,) offering reflections on Christian belief, and The Consistency of the Whole Scheme of Revelation with Itself and with Human Reason (1832,) examining religion’s harmony with reason.
Beyond theology, Shuttleworth contributed to education and clerical leadership. His sermons and publications influenced 19th-century English religious thought.
