Phil McGraw (b.1950,) fully Phillip Calvin McGraw, popularly known as Dr. Phil, is an American psychologist, television personality, and author. He is famous for his numerous appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, his daytime talk show, and many books.

Born in Vinita, Oklahoma, McGraw attended the University of Tulsa and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. After receiving a master’s degree and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas, McGraw started a self-motivation and life-skills seminar company and later a firm that produced mock trials, jury selection, and intervention services to lawyers.

McGraw started appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s television show—she called him “Tell It like It Is Phil”—that he quickly became a weekly fixture on the show. He had his own “Change Your Life” segments, which extended to the Tuesdays with Dr. Phil show.

McGraw started his show, Dr. Phil (s.2002,) produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Studios, and became an immediate hit. McGraw is also the author of several best-selling books, including Life Strategies (1999,) Relationship Rescue (2000,) Self Matters (2001,) The Ultimate Weight Solution (2003,) Love Smart (2005,) Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World (2012.)
