Peter Gilchrist McArthur (1866–1924) was a Canadian writer, poet, and farmer known for his humorous, insightful reflections on rural life. His works captured Canadian identity, blending wit, wisdom, and social commentary.
Born in Ekfrid Township, Ontario, he studied at the University of Toronto before pursuing journalism. He worked for the Toronto Daily Mail and later moved to New York City, contributing to Punch, The Atlantic Monthly, and The New York Sun. After a brief stay in London, England, he returned to Ontario in 1908 to focus on farming and writing.
His literary works include The Prodigal and Other Poems (1907,) In Pastures Green (1915,) The Red Cow and Her Friends (1919,) Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1919,) The Affable Stranger (1920,) and Stephen Leacock (1923.) His writing often explored nature, humor, and Canadian rural life. He also founded Ourselves: A Magazine for Cheerful Canadians (1910–12,) promoting optimism and literary engagement.
