Inspirational Quotes by Paulo Coelho (Brazilian Songwriter)

Paulo Coelho (b.1947) is a Brazilian author whose novels, including The Alchemist, have sold 140 million copies worldwide. He is best known for employing rich symbolism in his depictions of his characters’ spiritually motivated journeys.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Coelho dropped out of law school in 1970 and toured South America, Mexico, North Africa, and Europe. In 1972, he returned to Brazil and wrote pop and rock music lyrics with Brazilian singer-songwriter Raul Seixas.

In 1980, Coelho walked the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route in France and Spain. With a renewed interest in Catholicism, he wrote O diário de um Mago (1987; The Diary of a Magus, 1992; The Pilgrimage, 1995.)

Coelho’s most famous work is O alquimista (1988; The Alchemist,) a mystical chronicle of an Andalusian shepherd boy and his trek across North Africa in search of treasure. Coelho’s other celebrated works are the memoir As Valkírias (1992; The Valkyries) and the novel Na margem do Rio Piedra EU sentei e chorei (1994; By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept.)

Coelho’s following fiction and nonfiction works on questions of faith and spirituality are O monte Cinco (1996; The Fifth Mountain,) and Manual do Guerreiro da luz (1997; Manual of the Warrior of Light.) Coelho’s later novels include Veronika decide morrer (1998; Veronika Decides to Die,) O demônio e a Señorita Prym (2000; The Devil and Miss Prym,) O vencedor está só (2008; The Winner Stands Alone) and Hippie (2018) was inspired by Coehlo’s travels in the 1970s.
