Oleg Lolewski Cassini (1913–2006,) born Oleg Aleksandrovich Loiewski, was an American fashion designer best known for creating the iconic “Jackie Look” as Jacqueline Kennedy’s official designer. His streamlined, elegant designs shaped 1960s American fashion.
Born in Paris to an aristocratic Russian-Italian family, Cassini was raised in Florence, Italy, studying at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1936, working as a Hollywood costume designer for Paramount Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox, dressing stars like Gene Tierney, whom he later married.
Cassini’s career soared when Kennedy appointed him her official couturier in 1961, crafting over 300 outfits that defined her style. His influence extended beyond the White House, shaping ready-to-wear fashion and modern silhouettes.
His works include Pay the Price (1983,) a memoir on fashion and business; In My Own Fashion (1987,) detailing his life and career; and One Thousand Days of Magic (1995,) chronicling his work with Kennedy.
