Nikki Giovanni (1943–2024,) full name Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr., is an American poet, writer, and educator known for her powerful and candid works addressing race, social justice, and personal identity. A committed activist and educator, she has taught at various universities, including Virginia Tech, where she became a distinguished professor.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Giovanni earned her history degree from Fisk University in 1967 and emerged as a leading voice in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Her first poetry collection, Black Feeling, Black Talk (1968,) established her as a unique and compelling voice, combining political activism with personal introspection. Her bold and direct style resonated with a generation seeking to understand African American identity.

Subsequent works such as Black Judgment (1970) and The Women and the Men (1975) further solidified her literary stature. One of her most cherished works, Poems from a Parent to a Child (2001,) showcases her connection with readers of all ages. Her body of work also includes Rosa (2005,) a tribute to Rosa Parks, and Chasing Utopia: A Hybrid (2013,) a memoir blending personal history and poetry.
