Inspirational Quotes by Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor (British Politician)

Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor (1879–1964,) born Nancy Witcher Langhorne, was an American-born British politician, socialite, and the first woman to sit as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons. Known for her sharp wit and social influence, she broke barriers for women in politics and used her platform to advocate for progressive change.

Born in Danville, Virginia, Astor grew up in an influential family and moved to England after marrying Waldorf Astor, heir to the Astor fortune, in 1906. As part of the Astor family, she became actively involved in British political and social circles, championing causes such as social reform, women’s rights, and public health.

In 1919, she made history as the first woman elected as an MP for Plymouth Sutton. Serving as a Conservative MP 1919–45, she advocated for women’s suffrage, supported the welfare state, and maintained a commitment to pacifism during the interwar period. She was also a vocal critic of fascism and engaged in philanthropic work, particularly in education and social welfare.
