Mitch Kapor (b.1950,) fully Mitchell David Kapor, is an American entrepreneur, software designer, and philanthropist best known for founding Lotus Development Corporation and creating Lotus 1-2-3 (1982,) a groundbreaking spreadsheet program.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied at Yale University, earning a B.A. in 1971, and later attended the MIT Sloan School of Management. He worked as a DJ and computer programmer before co-founding Lotus Development Corporation in 1982. Lotus 1-2-3 dominated 1980s business software, revolutionizing personal computing.
Kapor left Lotus in 1986 and co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation (1990,) advocating digital rights and internet freedom. He later became founding chair of the Mozilla Foundation (2003,) supporting open-source software development.
