Inspirational Quotes by Milo Sweetman (Irish Archbishop)

Milo Sweetman (d.1380) was a 14th-century Irish Archbishop of Armagh, known for defending his archdiocese’s privileges and engaging in political and ecclesiastical disputes. He governed the Primatial See for 19 years.

Previously treasurer of the Diocese of Ossory, Sweetman was elected Bishop of Ossory in 1360, but Pope Innocent VI had appointed John de Tatenhale, leading to his reassignment as Archbishop of Armagh in 1361. A fierce advocate for Armagh’s primacy, he clashed with Thomas Minot, Archbishop of Dublin, over ecclesiastical authority. The conflict escalated, prompting King Edward III to intervene in 1365, urging resolution.

Sweetman was active in Irish politics, attending the Parliament of 1367, which passed the Statutes of Kilkenny. In 1374, he successfully opposed Lord Deputy Sir William de Windsor’s attempt to bypass the Irish Parliament by ordering clergy and laity to attend the English Parliament.
