Inspirational Quotes by Millicent Carey McIntosh (American Educator)

Millicent Carey McIntosh (1898–2001) was an American educator, administrator, and feminist known for her leadership in women’s education and advocacy for working mothers. The first married woman to head a Seven Sisters college, she shaped policies supporting career and family balance.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she studied at Bryn Mawr College, graduating magna cum laude (1920) in Greek and English. She earned a PhD in English from Johns Hopkins University (1926,) focusing on 14th-century mystery plays. She began her academic career as an assistant professor at Bryn Mawr, later serving as dean of freshmen.

In 1930, McIntosh became headmistress of the Brearley School, introducing full-day schooling and sex education. Appointed Dean of Barnard College in 1947, she later became its first President (1952–62,) doubling the endowment, expanding faculty salaries, and increasing scholarships. She received the Roosevelt Medal of Honor (1948) and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1966.)

McIntosh’s works include Education for Women (1953,) examining women’s roles in academia and society, and The Responsibility of Educated Women (1958,) advocating women’s leadership in professional fields.
