Michael Singletary (b.1958) is an American former football player and coach, best known as a middle linebacker for the Chicago Bears (1981–92) and a leader in defensive strategy. His intensity and skill made him one of the NFL’s most dominant linebackers.
Born in Houston, Texas, he played college football at Baylor University, earning All-American honors (1979, 1980.) Drafted by the Bears in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft, he became the heart of their defense and a key figure in the 1985 Super Bowl-winning team, anchoring the legendary 46-defense.
Singletary earned 10 Pro Bowl selections (1983–92,) was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice (1985, 1988,) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1998.)
After retiring, he coached as linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens (2003–04) and later head coach of the San Francisco 49ers (2008–10.) His publications include Singletary on Singletary (1990,) exploring his leadership philosophy, and Calling the Shots (2005,) discussing his coaching approach.
