Mike Leavitt (b.1951,) fully Michael Okerlund Leavitt, is an American politician, businessman, and public policy expert known for his leadership in healthcare, environmental policy, and governance. He served as Utah’s 14th Governor (1993–2003,) the 10th Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (2003–05,) and the 20th U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (2005–09) under President George W. Bush.
Born in Cedar City, Utah, he earned a B.A. in business from Southern Utah University. Before politics, he was CEO of The Leavitt Group, an insurance firm. As Governor, he led initiatives on education reform, infrastructure development, and the 2002 Winter Olympics.
As EPA Administrator, Leavitt prioritized clean air regulations and environmental stewardship. As HHS Secretary, he oversaw Medicare Part D implementation, developed the National Pandemic Plan, and expanded global health initiatives. After leaving government, he founded Leavitt Partners, advising on healthcare policy and business strategy. In 2021, he became President of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
Leavitt co-authored Finding Allies, Building Alliances: 8 Elements that Bring—and Keep—People Together (2013,) a book on collaborative leadership, with Rich McKeown.
