Michio Watanabe (1923–95) was a Japanese politician, Deputy Prime Minister (1991–93,) and a key Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) figure, shaping Japan’s economic and diplomatic policies.
Born in Ōtawara, Tochigi, he graduated from Tokyo College of Commerce (now Hitotsubashi University) in 1942. He worked as a reporter for Yomiuri Shimbun before entering politics, serving in the Tochigi Prefectural Assembly and later the House of Representatives (1963–95.)
Watanabe held ministerial roles, including Minister of Finance (1980–82,) Minister of International Trade and Industry (1985–86,) and Minister for Foreign Affairs (1991–93.) He was known for conservative economic policies and efforts to strengthen global trade relations.
