Inspirational Quotes by Maurice Chevalier (French Actor)

Maurice Auguste Chevalier (1888–1972) was a French actor, singer, and entertainer. He was known for witty and sophisticated films that contributed greatly to the establishment of the musical as a film genre during the early 1930s.

Born in Paris, France, Chevalier initially began his career in French cabarets, gaining acclaim for his performances in musical comedies like The Merry Widow (1907.) His charming stage presence and hits like Valentine contributed significantly to his popularity.

In the 1930s, Chevalier made a successful transition to Hollywood, starring in iconic films such as The Love Parade (1929) and Love Me Tonight (1932.) His charisma and musical prowess endeared him to audiences in both French and American cinema.

While World War II temporarily disrupted Chevalier’s career due to allegations of collaboration with the Nazis, he was later exonerated. His signature song, Thank Heaven for Little Girls, from the film Gigi (1958,) earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Returning to Hollywood in the 1950s, Chevalier appeared alongside Audrey Hepburn in Billy Wilder’s Love in the Afternoon (1957.) Gigi (1958,) his subsequent film, garnered nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, standing as his most popular movie. His later works included Can-Can (1960) and Fanny (1961.) In recognition of his over 50 years of contributions to the entertainment industry, Chevalier received an honorary Academy Award in 1958, solidifying his enduring legacy.
