Martin O’Malley (b.1963) is an American politician who served as Governor of Maryland (2007–15) and Mayor of Baltimore (1999–2007.) A Democrat, he has advocated progressive policies, data-driven governance, and environmental sustainability.
Born in Washington, D.C., O’Malley attended The Catholic University of America (B.A., 1985) and the University of Maryland School of Law (J.D., 1988.) He entered politics as a Baltimore City Council member (1991–99) before winning the mayoral race in 1999, focusing on crime reduction and urban revitalization.
As governor, he implemented StateStat, a performance management system inspired by his CitiStat initiative, and championed same-sex marriage legalization, immigration reform, and environmental protections. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, emphasizing progressive governance and climate action. In 2023, he was appointed Commissioner of the Social Security Administration.
