Inspirational Quotes by Marian Anderson (American Singer)

Marian Anderson (1897–1993) was an American contralto and one of the most celebrated classical singers of the 20th century. Her 1939 Easter Sunday concert at the Lincoln Memorial, performed after the Daughters of the American Revolution denied her the right to sing at Constitution Hall because of her race, became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Anderson’s vocal talent emerged early in a family that valued music. Despite training with local teachers, she faced racial barriers in the segregated music industry. Her breakthrough came in 1925 with a performance at New York’s Town Hall, earning her national recognition.

Her concert at the Lincoln Memorial, attended by over 75,000 people, symbolized racial integration. Her career flourished with performances at prestigious venues, including her Metropolitan Opera début in 1955. Renowned for her rich voice and varied repertoire of opera and spirituals, she received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.

Her autobiography, My Lord, What a Morning (1956,) details her life, career, and struggles as a trailblazer in classical music.
