Inspirational Quotes by Margaret Oliphant (Scottish Author)

Margaret Oliphant Oliphant (1828–97) was a Scottish novelist, historical writer, and biographer. She is best remembered for her vivid portrayals of small-town life. Over a literary career spanning five decades, she earned respect as one of the most esteemed and productive writers of her era.

Born in Wallyford, Midlothian, Scotland, Oliphant faced the challenges of widowhood at the young age of 31. Undeterred, she embarked on a taxing journey to provide for her own children and later for her brother’s children through her writing. One of her noteworthy contributions is the ‘Chronicles of Carlingford’ series, which commenced with Salem Chapel (1863.) This series offered insightful depictions of small-town life, delving into the social and moral complexities of the 19th century. Her reputation as a versatile and captivating storyteller solidified with historical novels like Miss Marjoribanks (1866) and Phoebe Junior (1876.)

Oliphant’s literary prowess extended across diverse genres, including supernatural fiction and biographies. Her impressive body of work comprised over 120 novels, numerous short stories, and non-fiction pieces. Despite enduring personal tragedies, such as the loss of her husband and children, Oliphant demonstrated remarkable resilience, remaining dedicated to her literary pursuits. Among her other notable works are A Beleaguered City (1880) and A Little Pilgrim in the Unseen (1882,) both forays into the supernatural realm. Additionally, she contributed to literary history with Annals of a Publishing House: William Blackwood and his Sons (1897.)
