Lucia Capacchione (1937–2022) was an Italian-American psychologist, art therapist, and author, known for pioneering journal therapy, inner-child work, and expressive arts therapy. Her methods influenced self-help, creativity, and emotional healing.
Born in West Hollywood, California, Capacchione studied at Immaculate Heart College, earning a B.A. in Art. She later pursued an M.A. in Human Development at Goddard College and a PhD in Psychology. She worked as a graphic designer and educator before transitioning into art therapy and holistic healing. She was a consultant for Walt Disney Imagineering (1983–93.)
Her breakthrough came with The Creative Journal (1979,) introducing journaling as a therapeutic tool. Other notable works include Recovery of Your Inner Child (1991,) exploring inner-child healing; The Power of Your Other Hand (1988,) promoting non-dominant hand writing for self-discovery; and Visioning: Ten Steps to Designing the Life of Your Dreams (2000,) integrating art and goal-setting. Later works include The Art of Emotional Healing (2006,) offering expressive exercises, and Hello, This Is Your Body Talking (2017,) a draw-it-yourself guide to body awareness.
