Inspirational Quotes by Louise Kaplan (American Psychoanalyst)

Louise Janet Kaplan (1929–2012) was an American psychologist and psychoanalyst, known for her research on childhood development, adolescence, and gender identity. Her work examined human behavior, sexuality, and the psychological effects of societal norms.

Born in New York City, Kaplan studied at Brooklyn College and earned her PhD in psychology from New York University. She held academic and clinical roles, including director of NYU’s mother-infant research nursery (1973–77) and associate professor at the College of the City University of New York (1977–80.)

Kaplan’s publications include Oneness and Separateness: From Infant to Individual (1978,) exploring early childhood development; Adolescence: The Farewell to Childhood (1984,) examining the transition to adulthood; and The Family Romance of the Impostor-Poet Thomas Chatterton (1987,) analyzing the poet’s identity struggles. Her most influential work, Female Perversions: The Temptations of Emma Bovary (1991,) investigates gender and societal expectations and was later adapted into the 1996 film Female Perversions starring Tilda Swinton. Other works include No Voice Is Ever Wholly Lost (1995) and Cultures of Fetishism (2006,) which explore attachment, identity, and psychological symbolism.
