Louis Eliezer Finkelstein (1895–1991) was an American rabbi, scholar, and leader in Conservative Judaism, known for his contributions to Jewish theology, Talmudic studies, and interfaith dialogue. As Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) 1940–72, he helped establish it as a leading center for Jewish education and scholarship.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Finkelstein later moved to Brooklyn, New York, studying at City College of New York before earning his PhD from Columbia University in 1918. Ordained at JTS in 1919, he joined its faculty as a Talmud instructor and advanced to provost, president, and chancellor.

His scholarship centered on Jewish law, ethics, and historical texts, producing influential works such as Jewish Self-Government in the Middle Ages (1924,) examining Jewish communal autonomy; The Pharisees: The Sociological Background of Their Faith (1938,) exploring the development of Jewish religious thought; and Beliefs and Practices of Judaism (1941,) providing a comprehensive overview of Jewish traditions. Later works include Tradition in the Making (1972,) discussing Jewish continuity and adaptation.
