Lope de Vega (1562–1635,) full name Félix Lope de Vega Carpio, was a prolific Spanish playwright, poet, and novelist who became one of the most influential figures in Spanish literature during the Golden Age.

Born in Madrid, Lope de Vega received a Jesuit education at the Colegio Imperial of Madrid, where he began his literary studies. He later studied at the University of Alcalá and was exposed to the literary world through his interactions with other writers and intellectuals. His early life was marked by passionate love affairs, military service, and involvement in court politics, which inspired much of his later work.

His plays revolutionized Spanish theater by introducing more dynamic plots, strong characters, and a complex emotional range, departing from the rigid classical structures that had previously dominated. His literary output was staggering, with over 1,500 plays attributed to him, although only around 400 survive today. His best-known works include the comedy Fuenteovejuna (1619,) a popular drama about collective action and justice, and the tragic Peribanez y el Comendador de Ocana (1604.) As a poet, he also wrote La Dragontea (1598,) an epic poem that celebrated the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and the novel La Arcadia (1598,) a pastoral narrative that became widely influential.
