Lisl Steiner (1927–2023) was an Austrian-American photographer and photojournalist. She wielded her lens to capture pivotal moments throughout 20th-century history.
Born in Vienna, Austria, Steiner fled the Nazi regime, finding refuge in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There, she pursued education at the University of Buenos Aires and the Fernando Fader School of Decorative Arts before eventually immigrating to the United States in 1940.
Steiner embarked on her photographic journey in the 1950s, swiftly gaining recognition for her keen eye and compelling compositions. By the 1960s, she had become a prominent photojournalist, actively documenting significant events such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Her iconic images, regularly featured in esteemed publications such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Life, and the Associated Press, bore witness to the social and political upheavals of that era.
Steiner’s lens also extended beyond American borders, capturing global events like the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the state funeral of John F. Kennedy. In the 1970s, she shifted her focus to more personal projects, delving into portraiture and exploring the nuanced tapestry of everyday life.
