Leo Jozef Suenens (1904–96) was a Belgian Catholic prelate who played a key role in the Second Vatican Council and Church modernization.

Born in Ixelles, Belgium, he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, earning degrees in theology, philosophy, and canon law. Ordained in 1927, he became Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels (1961) and was elevated to Cardinal (1962.) A strong advocate for reform, he emphasized the laity’s role and ecumenism, influencing Vatican II’s modernization efforts.

Suenens was active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, promoting spiritual revival within the Church. His writings reflect his theological insights and vision for reform. Notable works include Co-Responsibility in the Church (1968,) A New Pentecost? (1974,) and Renewal and the Powers of Darkness (1983.) He retired in 1979.
