Inspirational Quotes by Lenny Bruce (American Comedian)

Lenny Bruce (1925–66,) born Leonard Alfred Schneider, was an American comedian and social critic known for his controversial, boundary-pushing comedy. Active in the 1950s and early 1960s, he broke new ground by integrating satire, politics, religion, sex, and vulgarity into his performances.

Born in Mineola, New York, Bruce grew up in a Jewish family and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he pursued comedy, performing in clubs and nightclubs. His routines were noted for addressing taboo topics such as race, politics, religion, and sex, often blending social commentary with sharp wit. His fearless approach led to numerous obscenity charges, including a high-profile trial in 1964, but he was posthumously pardoned in 2003.

Bruce’s most famous work, How to Talk Dirty and Influence People (1965,) is an autobiography that reflects on his battles with censorship and personal struggles. His recorded performances, including The Sick Humor of Lenny Bruce (1959) and Lenny Bruce: The Great Comedian (1961,) further showcased his audacious comedy and solidified his legendary status. After his death, he became a cultural icon for free speech and political humor.

The reason I’m in this business, I assume all performers are—it’s “Look at me, Ma!” It’s acceptance, you know—“Look at me, Ma, look at me, Ma, look at me, Ma.” And if your mother watches, you’ll show off till you’re exhausted; but if your mother goes, Ptshew!

Today’s comedian has a cross to bear that he built himself. A comedian of the older generation did an “act” and he told the audience, “This is my act.” Today’s comic is not doing an act. The audience assumes he’s telling the truth. What is truth today may be a damn lie next week.
