Leigh William Steinberg (b.1949) is an American sports agent, philanthropist, and author, regarded as a leading figure in professional sports representation. He has represented over 300 athletes, including eight No. 1 overall NFL draft picks, and inspired the film Jerry Maguire.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Steinberg attended the University of California-Berkeley, earning a B.A. in political science (1970) and a J.D. (1973.) He launched his career by negotiating a record-breaking contract for Steve Bartkowski, the first overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft, cementing his reputation as a top sports agent. Beyond representation, he has directed millions to charitable causes and founded the Steinberg Leadership Institute to combat racism and inequality.
His notable books include Winning with Integrity (1999,) exploring ethical negotiation, and The Agent: My 40-Year Career Making Deals and Changing the Game (2014,) a memoir on sports management. His works provide insights into leadership, negotiation, and athlete advocacy.
