Kurt Hahn (1886–1974,) fully Kurt Matthias Robert Martin Hahn, was a German educator and philosopher known for his innovative approach to experiential learning and character development. He founded influential institutions, including Schule Schloss Salem (1920,) Gordonstoun (1934,) Outward Bound (1941,) and the United World Colleges (1962.)
Born in Berlin, he studied at Oxford, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and Göttingen, developing a passion for classical philosophy and education. He served as private secretary to Prince Max of Baden, Germany’s last Imperial Chancellor, before shifting to educational reform.
Hahn’s philosophy emphasized physical fitness, adventure-based learning, self-reliance, and compassion. His “Seven Laws of Salem” outlined principles for holistic education, focusing on self-discovery, resilience, and service. His ideas shaped leadership training, outdoor education, and youth development worldwide.
Notable works include Education and Peace: The Foundation of Modern Society (1936,) exploring education’s role in global stability, and Outward Bound: Address at a Meeting of the Outward Bound Trust (1958,) detailing experiential learning philosophy. Other works include Gordonstoun and a Europe Mission (1947) and Training for and Through the Sea (1947.)
