Katha Pollitt (b.1949) is an American poet, essayist, and columnist known for her insightful commentary on feminism, politics, and social issues. She gained prominence for her sharp wit and incisive analysis in addressing contemporary issues through her writing.
Born in Brooklyn Heights, New York, she earned a B.A. in philosophy from Radcliffe College in 1972 and an M.F.A. in writing from Columbia in 1975. Her writing focuses on political and social issues from a left-leaning perspective, including abortion, racism, welfare reform, feminism, and poverty. Pollitt has contributed regularly to publications such as The Nation, where her column ‘Subject to Debate’ has been a platform for her feminist perspectives since 1995. Her essays and reviews have also appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The London Review of Books, Ms., and The New York Times, among others.
As a poet, Pollitt’s collections include Antarctic Traveller (1982,) The Mind-Body Problem (2009,) and The Bees (2021,) showcasing her lyrical talent and introspective exploration of personal and political themes.
